The Irish in Europe Project was instituted in 1997 to promote scholarly study of Irish migration to Continental Europe in the early modern period. It is a multi-disciplinary, cross-institutional research initiative that seeks to advance the study of Irish migrant experience in Europe by promoting a combination of archival, prosopographical and statistical investigations. It does this as follows:
- Organisation of regular conferences at which scholars engaged in archival research in relation to Irish migrants in early modern Europe deliver their findings
- Publication of the proceedings of these conferences
- Establishment and maintenance of a series of web-integrated, interactive biographical databases of the Irish in Europe, 1580-1815
- Providing an up-to-date bibliography of publications and reviews of relevance to scholars studying Irish migration to Europe in the early modern period
- Maintenance of a network of interested scholars
